My Menopause Blog: Hot Flash News

I have been keeping mum about this for the last few weeks for fear of waking the sleeping, fire-breathing dragon. Today I throw all caution to the wind, thanks to a favorable horror-scoop, an unusual pre-dawn get-up-and-get-at-it awakening and my realization that this is news.

My hot flashes seem to have fizzled out. Gone. Burned off, out and up leaving me cool, calm and clothed.

The weather gets full credit. Not for helping cool my jets but rather for helping me notice the absence of my former hot self. We’ve had a bit of a bloody cold spring up here in Can-er-da. Unlike winter, where sock less….barefoot no less…..me….former Ice Toes Queen 1970 - 2005…I wandered my home, intentionally seeking cold floors to help sooth my French-fried digits. Now, right now as June looms on the horizon, my feet, wrapped in socks and boots, are blocks of ice.

Nose, fingers, neck all cooler than cucumbers, despite the four shirts…two made of fleece…that cover my body.

Gee Sue, sounds like you’re complaining.

(Shuffle shuffle, look away, smile…guiltily….hmmmm….maybe just a tad.)

I will admit this. I don’t like being cold. Melting down is not fun. Give me the few moments that existed between one stage and the other and by golly, I’d be a happy camper.

Right then. How did this happen?

Beats me really. I’m still chewing on Evening Primrose Oil. Adrenal Formula Capsules are dutifully being consumed thrice daily. Vitamin B’s, C’s, and more oil….Flax and Cod get tossed into the mix. Plus a bit but not too much Soy finds its way into my diet here and there.

Then there’s this blog….could daily blogging decrease hot flashes?

Well then.

Wow, have I had some hot flashes lately… Normaly, I’m cold-blooded and I wear extra clothes to keep warm. The past couple of days, I am wearing less and feeling hotter. (in air conditioning) I’m post menopausal, I used to take low dose estrogen, but stopped taking it about a month ago. Didn’t think it was doing me any good. Could I have been mistaken? You mentioned some vitamins, are they helping hot flashes?

    Please respond.

    Susan

I’m not sure what is helping me Susan. I have been talkind daily capsuals of Evening Primrose for over a year. Plus I’m taking an adrenal support which also helps with menopausal symptoms. No doubt stopping your estrogen is influencing your body temperature. But staying on estrogen, even a low dose doesn’t seem to get much support out there.

    Perhaps less clothes, more ice.

    Best,

    Sue

It’s been lately that I have been having more hot flashes. I have been peri-menopause for a few years now and for just about the last 6 months the flashing has gotten worse. There is a product called Remifemin on the market, was just wondering if you know anything about it? It is free from estrogen, I know that much.

    Please respond, thanks
    Debbie

    Hi Debbie,

According to the Complete Natural Medicine Guide to Women’s Health, Remifemin is essentially Black Cohosh which is listed as a nutrient therapy for hot flashes. It’s said to activate the parasympathetic nervous system….relaxation and deep breathing exercises have a similar effect. Have you had your hormone levels checked? And by chance, are you under more stress and getting less exercise in the last six months? Both are risk factors that aggravate hot flashes.

    Best,

    Sue

i have had hot flashes from 35 years old and i am now 59. nothing has worked and my g.p. doesn’t think anything but genetics is the cause. just wanted to let you know that when yours are over, mine will still be here.

  6. Susan Kuchinskas Says:

It’s been five years and I’m still getting warm flashes. Very frustrating. I did three years of plant-based, natural HRT which worked great at first and then stopped working. I haven’t worn a sweater in years. Chinese herbals, notably “Five Immortals” also worked well for a while and then didn’t. Very frustrating!

I have had a few periods of a couple weeks when I was flash-free. I feel there might be some diet connection, but I can’t figure out what. I do eat tons of tofu.

    Bonnie,

Sorry to hear about the relentless nature of your personal global warming.

    Susan,

Some food does trigger hot flashes. Coffee aka caffine is a biggy. Alcohol too. Anything spicy can set a person off as well. I’ve had to reduce my red wine intake which likely helps relieve more than hot flashing.

Good luck to both of you!

Hey, people. I hope the blogging helps too, it will certainly help us younger women in the wings. Just visiting via a link from an Australian friend - thank you for chronicling your sufferings, I’m 45 and getting some work in between looking after my handicapped son - not looking forward to anything else going wrong in the next five years! so any advice I find here will be very welcome indeed.
    Good luck to you all.
