Finally, after almost two years of wondering, I found the answer to one of my frequently considered question. Just when exactly does post menopause start?
I mean, I get the peri-menopause thing and I totally understand the benchmark of menopause - classically understood as 12 consecutive months without your period - but post? And if there was a post menopause then did that mean that actual menopause lasted 1 day? Or was there another, never mentioned defining feature of post passing that ‘no one really talks about’?
If it was a one day event, then why wasn’t I being bombarded with invitations to attend the grand day? Or conversely, if post menopause did exist then how could so many foggy thinking women keep a secret - from each other - about some other universally shared, final stage of menopausal, defining symptom?
So image my relief when Hormone Health specialist Jackie Harvey answered my question. Quite simply post menopause doesn’t start.
Apparently the whole idea of post menopause is a misnomer. You see, once you reach menopause, you’re there - you’ve arrived - there is no after-menopause club to aspire to.
It’s Club Meno all the way out girlfriends. Which to me is good news - there’s one less thing to figure out.

My dear Sue,
I love this!!! I don’t know who came up with the “post menopause” theory either. Do we all of a sudden re-gain our periods and lose the additional pounds we picked up? Whatever! I just say I’m on the journey and wherever it leads I’m there.
Thanks for this and I would so love to post it in its entirety on my website. May I?
Peace & Blessings,
Beverly Mahone

Hi Sue
I too was confused about the post menopause thing. Thanks for clearing that up.
My brain took a big fog hit when the kids were born. Over the years, I’ve stopped noticing the fuzz (perhaps due to more fuzz) and learned to cope by making lots of lists.
What I notice most about aging (which to me is the issue as menopause seems to have arrived without any of the usual fanfare) is my need to wear glasses for reading and sewing and anything that gets viewed up close. I keep losing the glasses (brain problem striking again) even though I have several pair.
My other peeve (what an elderly word) is my general creakiness. If I drive for over an hour, or sit at the movies, I can hardly get up without feeling that I have siezed up. Lots of yoga is helping.
What I love about menopause: not dealing with a period, no 3 day headache every month, new underwear that keeps on looking nice, no worries about birth control, no mood swings and weird food cravings and no cramps. If it weren’t for the fact that not having a period reminds me that I am getting older, I’d totally like being in menopause!!
Bye for now and see you on Liverpool Street!
