If you asked my older brother, he would gleefully tell you that his little sister is going grey. Why this gives him such delight can easily be chalked up to the perpetual BIG, MEAN BROTHER syndrome that never ends even as said bro is facing 60.
If you ask me - I claim that my flowing locks have settled on a crisp Arctic Blond hue. Which is still grey - but with lots of cache.
Just this morning I came across a scrap of paper with ‘Tips for Grey Hair’ scrawled across the top. I know not where this came from, despite it being my handwriting, so there will be no credit where credit is due. Still, since I went to the trouble and because I know I’m not the only greying meno-mare in the stable, here we have four grey hair tips for you to tuck away or try out.
- Conditioner should become your new best friend.
- Rinse your hair as soon as you get out of the pool. If you don’t - your hair may turn algae green.
- Wear a hat whenever you are in the sun. Apparently, grey hair is particularly prone to drying out.
- The kicker: Use purple-hued shampoo - designed specifically for grey, grey hair. It’ll give you a bright kinda disco floor look.
Ah yes, I’ve read the book - When I am an old lady - my hair will be purple.

Ever heard of blueing? People use to use it to whiten their clothes and on their grey hair. I use to use it to whiten my nurses cap. My hub’s great-grandmother used it on her hair to brighten it up and it worked!
I started to go grey when I was 19. Not fun at all. By the time I was 21 I was colouring it. Easy to do since my boyfriends sister was a hairdresser.
When I hit my mid-30’s I let the natural colour grow back in. People use to stare at my skunk line with horror and I must say my hair looked pathetic as my natural colour grew back in all mottled up by the out-going colour. So, once I was back to the au naturel I kept it for about 10 years. At first it was a great salt & pepper look and the grey wasn’t grey, it was silver. As the decade passed, it became more white then silver and it filled in like a ball cap across the top of my head, ear to ear. Then it started to go yellowish blech!
Long story shortened a tad…I started colouring it again. This time finding a hairdresser who doesn’t use toxic chemicals (well that’s what she tells me) and I’m back to colouring with highlights. I’m very happy with it but the other night I had this dream. I’m life-guarding and while standing in the guard hut I’m thinking I should cut my hair & let it return to it’s normal colour and then in the dream in walks Anderson Cooper (CNN 360) and as he walks by me I say to myself, ‘men get to have grey hair & be sexy!’ Obviously, on the unconscious level I’m dealing with a few things.
I should blog about this. LOL!

I always wanted a silver streak… but alas since discovering my first grey mini-stipe over the left edge of my face, the grey has only managed to disperse throughout my head…. except for Jeff who keeps me in color.
Now I’m not yet menopausal… but at what point is it acceptable to go purple? I LOVE the idea of purple hair!
