My Menopause Blog: Hormone Replacement Therapy - Still

HRT is back in the news because of the continued analysis of data from the Women’s Health Initiative. Here’s a link to the story from Canada’s National Newspaper, the Globe and Mail.

Risk of cancer continues after women halt hormone therapy

To get a sense of the menopause pulse currently surrounding HRT, check out the many comments this news story generated. As an example, I’ve included one below.

N L from Canada writes: “There is no such thing as a ’severe’ case of menopause. There are however, peri and menopausal women who won’t stop drinking caffeine laden soft drinks, coffee, tea and alcohol, stop smoking, stop over-eating, stop eating useless carbohydrates. All these things cause insulin and (other) hormone dysfunctions. There is no time when these drugs are NOT carcinogenic, and then suddenly, carcinogenic. They are ALWAYS carcinogenic. They are rolling dice with your life, but you will be the one to pay. When you get cancers from these hormones, the doctors will not be to blame. They will say you insisted on the drugs, telling them your case was severe.”

I thank Vic Hotte from Kettleby, Canada who sums up my sentiments about societies drug use with this catchy slogan.

“Too many of life’s normal transitions are being ‘medicalized’ in the name of profit, described as “A pill for every ill, and a potion for every emotion.”"

  1. Sergey Kalitenko, MD Says:

This data was based on Women Health Initiative study. Hormones, used in this study were conjugated ( horse ) estrogens and progestins ( not progesterone ). Conjugated estrogens have a problem: they cannot be metabolized properly in our body. Normally estrogens are metabolized via 2-OH pathway, which is ok. Conjugated ( horse ) estrogens are metabolized via 4-OH pathway, possibly producing cancerogens, linked to breast cancer. The solution of the problem might be the use of the hormones with the same molecular structure, as our own hormones.

Its all so confusing to us non- scientific people. One study shows this, another contradcits it, one doctor says it is OK, another says don’t go near it….meanwhile we go on coping with all the symptoms of menopause too scared to do anything or worried sick if we give in and take something. There is evenb some bad press about natural cures like black cohosh. Whatever we do we are playing with fire and as we feel like we are on fire most of the time that is probably poetic justice!!
