Since succinct and pity are my new blogging styles, allow me to share this sweet gem of advice that I heard while listening to CBC’s Ideas last night.
Trust your own sense.
If something feels right, it likely is. If it feels wrong, back away and reassess.

What does research say about bioidentical hormone replacement in terms of risk of cancer and heart disease?

And therin lies the rub! There is very little research being done on bio-identical hormones because the pharmaceutical companies cannot patent a natural substance. Research follows the money. Anecdotal evidence seems to suggest that if used in the proper balance, bio-identical’s replenish our normal stores of hormones, and may in fact be protecting us from many diseases. Unfortunately, nothing has been done to substantiate these claims in a formal way. I have used BHRT for years, and feel that they contribute to my overall vitality.
Another troubling factor I recently wrote about in my blog is the confusion around synthetic and bio-identical hormones. The media reports talk about “hormones” and don’t differentiate between the two. I believe they would better serve the public discussion if they used 2 different terms - Synthetic hormones and Bio-identical hormones. Then at least we can have a conversation that’s meaningful. What do you think?

Hi Sue,
I love your new style — it’s like menopause haiku sometimes! I am trying to get my own women’s health blog off the ground. The most difficult part — I think — is trying to establish my unique voice. I want it to be newsy, but still personal. I want to point out good references without being preachy. It ain’t easy, but I’m trying!
Maggie and Rita — I’ll check out both your blogs and here is a great article that I think really spells it out when it comes to HRT and Bioidenticals — http://www.womentowomen.com/bioidentical-hrt/default.aspx (sorry if this doesn’t show up as a live link). As I keep wading through all the conflicting info out there I keep reading this again and again to keep my head straight!
